‘Happy Huli’s’ by David Kirkland photographer.

The Huli Wigmen of the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea take their performance very seriously. It’s rare that you’ll see them laughing in an arena. Yet, on this particular day, I was in the company of a female magician from the United States who made it her mission to change all that. Given access to the dance arena, Lisa tried a few tricks to make them laugh but to no avail until she appeared to pull a coin from the backside of the lead performer which brought everything to an abrupt standstill and delivered a silence that seemed to last an eternity. But, then, came an eruption of laughter from the entire group that filled the valley…..and a story I’m sure is still being told in the smokey huts of the highlands today.

Nola is the Papua New Guinean with the striking features who’s holding the mask in this photo.
