Female King Parrot on rescued timber  by Susanne Bianchi

I discover pieces of discarded wood when I visit the local Woodworkers Workshop. They are happy for me to select pieces from their discarded bin.

Each piece of timber is unique as each tree grows differently depending on where it grew and what environment it existed in.
Nature is wonderful and I love the widely differing timber grains that can be found. Often this grain influences what I am going to do with the piece.

I usually put it on a shelf in my studio and wait till I can visualise what I am going to do with it.

I paint Australian fauna to raise their awareness as many species are declining and this is a disturbing trend.

This piece is an Australian Female King Parrot – Scientific name: Alisterus scapularis.
Endemic to eastern Australia it is found in humid and heavily forested upland regions of the eastern portion of the continent, including eucalyptus wooded areas in and directly adjacent to subtropical and temperate rainforest. They feed on fruits and seeds gathered from trees or on the ground.

The specifications for this piece:Weight: 700g – Width: 13cm- Height: 36cm – Depth: 3.5cm
