Custodians Of The Land Divers 11 by David Kirkland photographer.

This is the second of three portraits I shot of Keith – the custodian of the land diving ritual I was photographing on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu. I mete him at the start of my career as a photographer. He was one of the land divers I photographed, hurtling earthward rom the top of the tower. So, 20 years later, you can imagine my delight to return and find him, well, alive for a start, and happy to see me again. However, he was now overseeing the safety of the young divers who were to follow his example. Over three days, as final adjustments were made to the tower and vines were cut from the forest to be tied to the diver’s ankles, I was able to photograph Keith in what remains some of the most enjoyable and rewarding days in my career as a photographer.
