Custodians Of The Land Divers 111 by David Kirkland photographer.

This is the last in a series of three portraits shot of a Land Diver I befriended on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, having photographed him 20 years earlier. I knew him only by his first name, Keith. One of the greatest challenges he faced as a custodian of the land dives in his village was choosing the jungle vines that would snap taught and prevent the diver from  crashing into the ground. Too long, and injury – if not death – would likely result. Too short and the diver’s bravery would never be recognised and a bountiful yam harvest could not be assured. I recall watching Keith dive those many years ago. How close had he come to the ground from such a great hight? Close enough to leave a cut on his forehead.
