Crocodile Clansmen by David Kirkland photographer. Photographed in the Cook Islands.

After paddling up the Sepik River in a dug-out canoe for an hour or so, we found a shaded rock-pool that I thought would be ideal to photograph two young initiates of one of the river’s crocodile clans. In several villages along the Sepik, young men are taken through a painful initiation ritual where their bodies are scarred to represent the much-revered crocodile. Hundreds of tiny incision are made to their torso before being packed with mud to form callouses, patterned into the shape of a crocodile head.
