Chroma Threads – Neptunes Necklace I by Jacquelyn Stephens

This is an original, one off, abstract painting on canvas ready to hang on your beautiful wall.

I love to explore the miniscule fragments of life and all things microscopic and aquatic. This painting ‘Chroma Threads – Neptune’s Necklace I’ responds to the beauty of DNA Threads, chromosomes, living cells, minuscule plant growth and of course, the otherworldliness of underwater sea life. Bioluminescent organisms, corals and seaweeds, to be specific, as the title suggests, Neptune’s Necklace. I have always been fond of this particular seaweed as it conjures happy memories from my years of Snorkelling and rock-pooling around the southern coast of Victoria. I love the way it drifts with the high-tide flow and falls awkwardly at rest on the low tide.

I have gone a little minimalist on this painting without losing a sense of play and intrigue. There is a dramatic interplay between light and dark negative space and the palette is tinged with some magenta, orange, yellow and umber creating a striking illumination in areas cross the dark field. This black background also creates a kind of otherworldly tranquillity like deep water, the perfect backdrop for the fragile fragments of nature and cell-like forms drifting across the surface.

This dark background space also alludes to Dark-field microscopy. This is a light technique used in microscopic photography to illuminate the focus of the scientific subject from the field around it. So often it is all about looking and seeing! I have always adored the drama of high contrast dark and light. So much so that earlier on in my pre-Art School days, most of my drawings resembled X-rays, I then started drawing inspiration from actual X-rays. Now I find it also speaks of our circulating Covid19 medical pandemic, genomics (genetic tracing) and scientific research for a cure. Which is so much about looking hard into a particular thing.

‘Chroma Threads – Neptune’s Necklace I’ can be viewed as all these different memories and things, but ultimately it is about triggering our sense of awe and wonder at these miraculous building blocks of life. And then, our reflections on the fragility of these vulnerable natural worlds and our important position as guardians of this precious environment.

Ultimately, what I enjoy most about my paintings are that they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls intrigue, beauty and a talking point for years to come.

ALL PAINTINGS ARE VARNISHED with Professional Quality Artists Varnish, once they have been photographed. This gives a protective surface and an exquisite sheen that really makes the colours powerful & eye-catching.

The painting is on canvas wrapped around traditional wooden stretcher bars with edges that are a smart 3.5cm deep. The edges are cleaned, staple free and painted black to compliment the background in the painting.

Ready to hang with picture wire on back.
