Banksia for Murray by Elizabeth Mead – One of a series on Banksia blooming in Newcastle, in the Hunter region of NSW in the Spring of 2020. The colours and the light were all captured with a variety of mark making. Negative spaces in the work are as much the primary influence as the colour combinations of leaf and blossom.
Banksias exhibit a variety of shapes that correspond to the lifecycle of the flower. It is a remarkable Australian Native, resilient and hopeful – not a bad mascot for this year of the Covid pandemic. Murray is the name of my late father, he was named after the river Murray that runs through NSW. He was a lasting influence of courage and truth.
The work is on cotton canvas and is ready for hanging.
