Printed on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre mounted on 3.3mm aluminium panel – ready to hang.

Drones are pretty amazing things – not only are they a simply fantastic moving camera, but they can also be used in 3D scanning, using photogrammetry to produce a 3D model from a series of overlapping photos.

I did a 3D scan of the opal mine tailings in the town of Andamooka, in outback South Australia. That is crazy country! It’s just mounds of dirt and holes in the ground, vast fields of diggings, like some weird spiritual practice of earth-moving, this involuntary land-art movement kind of hiding in plain site.

3D scans are rendered as point clouds, which contain millions of points recording colour and depth. We can use virtual cameras to fly around the 3D landscapes, and re-photograph and film them. And we can kind of dip beneath the Earth, and see the mine shafts descending below the surface. It creates this beautiful waveform effect, with the mounds and holes kind of rippling into the distance.
