Magnolias are thought to be one of the first flowering plants to evolve on Earth.  Fossil remains show they have been around for 100 million years. Therefore a Magnolia means stability and grace through the ever changing ages.  There are currently over 200 species and new varieties are being developed all the time.  Each variety is stunningly beautiful with large, fragrant petals.  I have attempted to convey this beauty on a raw linen canvas, feeling that the earthy colour of the background would lend itself to the history of these wonderful blooms.  The raw linen is coated with a transparent gesso so that you can see the grain and colour of the original canvas.  The petals were all blocked in with acrylic and then finished off with the lovely buttery texture of oils which allows for more subtle shading and contouring of the petals.  This is a painting which should appeal to all lovers of beauty and of history.
