Afternoon swim in my Louboutin’s by Kerry Inkster

I work from found and created photographs and film stills. At first glance I was immediately taken by this image – the wonderful sense of floating up to the surface, the freedom and fun of doing it in heels, the colour and light filtered through the water… it represented elation, freedom, breaching, breaking free, coming to the surface, and importantly renewal to me. I immediately wanted to paint it but life, as it sometimes does, got in the way with a nasty divorce. Fast forward to today, I am very happy to have a new studio space and the time to paint!

In the theme of renewal the beautiful professional frame is made of recycled floor boards. I have recycled the canvas from a previous acrylic painting of mine, covered it in Japanese Rice Paper to give a lovely texture that is akin to the movement on the surface of water.

This painting is painted using high quality artist acrylic paints and mediums from Matisse, Golden, and Liquitex Professional Spray Paint. Japanese Rice Paper has been applied to the canvas prior to painting the image.  The painting is finished with a Matisse Polymer Satin Varnish which protects the surface with a smooth finish.

As with most of my paintings I paint in layers – the background using action painting techniques – pouring, dripping, splashing paint and involving my body in the painting process rather than just the paint brush. The figure was created using pop art techniques and stencils, and a further layer of hand painting brought the foreground and background together in what you see in the photograph. My palette is lovely and bright in this painting, mostly consisting of complementary colours of orange and blue.

I particularly love this piece – the colour and the fun subject – and I hope you like it to.

It has been professionally framed, will be signed on the front, and is ready to enjoy.
