Passionate painters create artworks for themselves, not guided by what sells. Such an egotistical truth! This work is a prime example. Through this Australian fine art oil painting you can see the firefighters of yesteryear show the same the courage as firefighters today.  The core are volunteers answering the call to hazardous duty that will provide rescue, prevention and hope.

So my desire was to honour those who are always there when bush fires flare in this hot, dry country. The early firefighters were as courageous as firefighters of today. Horses to get them to the fire; a barrel of water on the couch and pretty much nothing more.

In the days of this painting, circa 1880, a community having a horse drawn fire engine was rare. Also, having those dashing brass helmets and uniforms rarer still. Though I am allowed artistic license I hope.

This is what I wanted to capture through various elements in this work – John 15:13 ‘Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.’

Firefighters racing to a burning timber home where the adults worked together to tame the blaze and the children were in charge.  The team arrived bearing a barrel of water and a fire hose but most importantly experienced willing volunteers.
