Theo Papathomas is a Melbourne based, formally trained, highly intuitive visual artist. His inspiration derives from the Australian landscape, its seasonal changes and the ever-shifting energies of it. He uses a mix of acrylic paints on canvas to form abstract sceneries of colour and movement. “I love using different mediums, acrylic and oil paints and using the pallet knife to create texture and give a three-dimensional feel to my paintings.”
“I always love starting a new canvas and fill it with so much energy and spontaneity. My style is abstract impressionist. I love painting the Australian Landscape which for me has an immense spirituality, which I have evoked in my constructed landscapes. My paintings are completely spontaneous and intuitive without using any drawings as a guide tool,” Theo has described his art. “At the moment I am painting my petals series and my confetti series and sometimes my abstract expressionist paintings.”
As an intuitive and spiritual artist, the immense spirituality of the Australian landscape is a common element in his work. The images and symbols represented in his paintings, then again, are purely spontaneous. Theo’s canvasses are filled with emotion and spirituality aimed at transporting the viewer into a new experience.
Theo’s intuitive approach to art and life in general is a guiding line for him and present in all aspects of his art. “Being a Greek Orthodox, my work has always been very spiritual and optimistic,” he said. “Art for me is a visual form of communication. [I am more] comfortable in communicating this way rather than verbally.”
“[Usually] I love using very vibrant colours but some days, I prefer a very limited colour palette to create very subtle paintings. My work is always changing and evolving, just like humans do, and when I am in a good place, my art reflects that. When I am sad, that shows too.”
Theo has been painting ever since he was very young. He formalised his Fine Art training at RMIT University and his plan was to become a fulltime artist but the difficulties in earning a living from art steered him to a different direction for some time. His tireless efforts have paid off later though and today he has sold numerous artworks, exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally and been a finalist and an award winner in many prestigious art prizes such as Wynne Prize at Art Gallery of NSW, Len Fox and Paddington Art Prize.
