Meet Treena Seymour

Art Lovers | 12 November 2018

Words by Alexandra Longstaff

Art runs deep in Treena Seymour’s veins. From a young age, she was exposed to the art world: her mother was an avid sewer and reupholster, and her Nanna was an artist herself. Treena’s family encouraged her to follow her artistic calling and her art was never in short supply.

Treena’s journey into becoming an artist began when she enrolled in a two-year fine art course at TAFE. Following this, she was offered a cut and paste role at a large printing firm, which saw her skills develop. But Treena cemented her position as an artist when she bit the bullet and decided to take art from passion project to full-time career.

Rhapsody In Colour (91.4 x 91.4cm, Acrylic on stretched canvas)

“It was a very long, drawn-out decision to leave the workforce I knew so well and venture into an entirely new world,” she explains. “Many questions were going through my mind, such as what if I don’t sell anything after becoming a full time artist?”

Tidal Flow (Diptych) (152 x 76cm, Acrylic on stretched canvas)

But her hard work and leap of faith paid off and her decision to go full-time has rewarded her with a quality of work she didn’t realise was possible. “I have leapt into another dimension and am loving the art I am creating,” says Treena. “Since becoming a full- time artist, my ability and availability to create art has increased tenfold.”

Majestic Glory (92.4 x 91.4cm, Acrylic on stretched canvas)

Treena’s art is a form of self-expression. She uses it as a means to share her emotions, thoughts, dreams, desires and experiences, in a manner that doesn’t rely on words. “There are times when verbal communication isn’t enough or the message just can’t be expressed definitely in words. A piece of art overcomes these and other such boundaries,” she explains.

Splashdown (91.4 x 45.7cm, Acrylic and ink on stretched canvas)

And while art is her expressive playground, nature is what takes her there. “For me, the ocean brings a sense of peace and order in my mind. Watching the ocean, I absorb its great energy and am filled with vitality and strength,” says Treena. This informs much of her art and she hopes to enable the audience to connect with the ocean as beautifully as she does.

Standing Out (91.4 x 91.4cm, Acrylic on stretched canvas)

Treena is heavily inspired by the Impressionist movement, highlighting her appreciation of Monet and Renoir. “The Impressionist style brought colour and light to the foreground and had the image or structure in the background,” explains Treena. “Light and the colours with which they are created dominated those paintings and therefore became the number-one importance when viewing.”

Oceans Intersection (61 x 61cm, Acrylic on Stretched Canvas)

This technique or style of painting influences Treena’s own style of painting. She has developed her own unique flair, but explains that the knowledge of Impressionism is never too far from her mind. Using acrylic, Treena’s pieces bathe in a range of meaning. “Acrylics allow me the freedom to create really whatever I like on whatever I like and come in a vast range of viscosities,” she says. “They also give me the license to create thick impasto paintings. I can build up the paint quickly, as its drying time is so rapid, all without cracking.”

Contrasting Similarities (91.4 x 91.4cm, Acrylic on stretched canvas)

The textured nature of acrylic brings Treena endless joy. But she also divulges that she’s not the sort of artist to stick to one thing. She craves diversity and change, which is reflected in her varying styles of art.

Barnacles 2 (60.9 x 76.2cm, Acrylic and ink on canvas)

“I yearn for the free flow of either an abstract pour like POOLSIDE [one of her artworks] or simply a loose abstract where my brushes are long and big and I can freely push the paint around the canvas like BARNACLES 1, 2 3. Maybe it’s all to do with balance,” says Treena. “I’m not sure but, whatever the reason is, it works for me.”
