…. A self taught and instinctive artist, residing in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. My practice is focused on glamour, pop art and urban culture based works – bringing glamour to street based styles and pop art is a fundamental amalgamation and marriage of my work. Stencil based works depicting Hollywood glamour and fashion icons of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s is common place, as is paste-ups featuring icons, childhood references and pop culture. Nothing is necessarily where it “should” be, but for me, it is!
My current series celebrates the “human” side of pop culture icons, glamour and rebels of society into stencil works with a distinctive pop art influence. Simple pieces, and often involving the less-seen side of these icons. Smiles, cheekiness, laughter : being human.
As a resident of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria; here I have the mental and physical space to instinctively create art without distraction – within the confines of our rustic farm shed. I cannot think of a better place to create!
A self taught and instinctive artist, my practice started in my early thirties – which was a dramatic shift from a background which had a distinct lack of artistic influence or drivers. Since then, my practice has evolved from small surrealist works, to large figurative and abstracts, and now a range of pop / street / urban culture based works. From multi-layered stencils to mashup pasteups, and a combination of the two….. these works are my ‘groove’ and my practice is constantly evolving from what comes to mind.
The main influence for my work is to reference images and memories, nostalgia and pop culture which resonate with the viewer. There is minimal pre-planning to my work as it forms spontaneously; is then printed, stenciled and/or pasted using traditional street based techniques, and finally hand painted and embelished as needed.
I cannot say that there is a main external driver to create art, its really something that comes naturally and evolves when I have the urge to create something.
If my work evokes a positive feeling, a sense of nostalgia and/or a memory that you resonate with and that brings a smile, then I have achieved all that I set out to achieve 🙂
