Bacchus Marsh, Victoria
I love capturing details that may go unnoticed by others. I work mainly in photography but enjoy encaustic painting, mixed media, and sculpture.

Nicole Heywood is a mixed media artist based in Bacchus Marsh, Australia with a Bachelor of Photography. Her surrounding landscape, towards Ballarat, the Macedon Ranges, and everywhere in between is a source of inspiration to her, as well as the kaleidoscope of other artists from the region.
Nicole works with encaustic paint, mixed media, and sculpture but her greatest love is photography. Her portfolio is a mixture of land and skyscapes, architecture, simple objects, and natural elements. Inspired by the beautiful unnoticed details in the everyday mundane, Nicole draws on her photography knowledge and surrealism to explore light, tones, angles, and composition.
Nicole’s art is enormously influenced by her times in France, specifically Paris, Lyon, and Annecy. She is fascinated with how different the light is there to that in Australia and this is reflected in the use of light in her works. Nicole’s recently completed ‘Layers’; series is created by layering original photographs of specific neighbourhoods in Paris, and towns in France or Australia. She includes buildings and layers them with smaller details such as lights, flowers, and decorated windows to create an overall image. The result is like that of a memory, an ambiguous blend that is not quite clear but evokes all the senses.
Nicole is a teacher of art, photography, textiles, and French, and this year she is a finalist in the National Teacher-Art prize. Nicole aspires to become an artist full time but at the moment is content artmaking whenever her children allow her the time. Nicole says, ‘Folding art into my every day is like coming home’.
