I work in the realist tradition because I feel it offers me the most challenges in the practice of fine art painting. I like to further challenge myself by inventing a lot of the objects that appear in my still life works.
I paint mainly still life, although my muse will sometimes lead me to landscape and the surreal. However, no matter the subject matter of a painting, ideas ebb and flow, additions and subtractions are made – sometimes drastic ones – during the course of the work. At some stage the look and feel of the work seems right and I consider it complete even though it may be far from my first conception. For me this not knowing what the end result will be adds to the excitement of painting.
