Mariya Rovenko is a Melbourne-based, USSR born artist, illustrator & graphic designer. After moving to Australia over 16 years ago, Mariya has returned to her first love – expressing creativity on paper, which she does through a series of incredibly detailed and often ironic black and white studies.
Born in the USSR and now based in Melbourne, theatre costume designer by training and artist by calling I was lucky enough to get to work with both – digital and traditional media, which gave me the best payout possible – skills and experience to create and express myself.
My photorealistic pen on paper drawings are the result of this natural evolution, as my process involves most of the things that I’ve learned previously in various disciplines – from traditional watercolour painting and film photography to digital graphic design.
My inspiration generally falls into two categories – one is discovering and translating the beauty of shapes and forms of familiar natural or man made things, and giving them an extra dimension on paper.
The other one is having a bit of an ironic or playful look at what’s making buzz at the moment, be it a release of a hyped movie or an event.
