Leah Mariani is a Melbourne based artist making art about people, identity and relationships. She draws on her experience as a woman and a mother, and resultantly most of her work is about childhood and womanhood. She is a passionate advocate of women’s issues and gender equality, which is a constant theme in her work.
Leah’s work is figurative, decorative, colourful and feminine. It shows an interest in pattern and includes it in nearly all her work through stencils, collaged fabric or paper. She has an extensive collection of fabrics and decorative paper. Her attraction to pattern comes from her love of order, as an accountant, but more and the decorative element that it adds. She predominately works in oils, but also dabbles in paper collage and printmaking.
In 2012 she held her first solo show and has been exhibiting every second year since. Her work has been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards, including the Lethbridge 10,000, Hornsby Art Prize, Agendo and the Metro Art Prize. Recently she completed a post graduate certificate of visual art at the VCA, which is part of the University of Melbourne.
