Melbourne
I’m a Melbourne based artist who loves to paint birds, animals, flowers and the female form. Most of my paintings are quirky and slightly surreal because I believe art should make us smile and feel good.

Laural Retz is a Melbourne based artist. She grew up in the bush of North Warrandyte on the outskirts of Melbourne during the 70’s and 80’s. Warrandyte has largely been an art-centric community which was an ideal environment to nurture her developing passion for creating art. Having drawn and painted since a small child, her subjects often included insects, budgies and horses, however, in her mid 20’s she undertook Life Drawing studies and from that point on her love for painting the human form began.
“I’m attracted to the off-beat in art. Anything quirky, vibrant and unusual makes my heart beat faster and so when I paint I try to be all of these things. I love using bright bold colours and in recent years detailed sections have begun to feature heavily in my work. I find these sections are a way for me to express other topics of interest whilst simultaneously including them with representations of the human body. Most of my work is slightly surreal and often ventures into the pop art genre. I believe art should make us smile and feel good, but also ask us to question what we know and look beneath the surface.”
She achieved a Visual Arts Diploma from the Cooloola Sunshine Institute of Tafe in Noosaville in 2001 and has been a practicing artist since then.
