Laura Oczos paints imagined landscapes that are autobiographical in nature. She is interested in the dynamic nature of memory and draws on past and present experiences to create work that often combines multiple points of view and captures the spirit of the moment rather than exact places.

Up until 2020 I was a special education teacher working with students who have internalising mental health disorders; however, I have now started to shift towards full time artist. After studying a BFA I participated in a few solo and group shows but ultimately had a 14-year hiatus to focus on my teaching career. I started painting again in 2019. Initially, painting again was a way to cope being a recently solo parent with a newborn and during my maternity leave I worked feverishly to develop a style but mostly created terrible things even my parents did not want. Sometime later I created an Instagram account and decided to start selling my art. Fortunately, I started selling work quickly which has allowed me to move away from full time teaching. In 2021, I was a finalist in the Lethbridge 20000 and National Capital Art Prize and a finalist in the 2022 Art to Art Unearthed Prize. My work has been featured in Art Edit and Home Design magazine and collected by both national and international buyers.
