Jo is best known for her ability to bring to life the individual character of the subject, particularly with their eyes, and instil a sense of realism, motion, and vivid energy into a piece.
Jo is best known for her ability to bring to life the individual character of the subject, particularly with their eyes, and instil a sense of realism, motion, and vivid energy into a piece. Jo is regularly commissioned for human and pet portraits. Her love of animals, particularly horses, is reflected in the subject matter of many of her pieces. She is a great supporter of the Earth and its wildlife, often painting the many wonderful animals, and in particular has painted regularly in support of the Australian Brumby.
Originally from New Zealand Jo arrived in Australia in her mid teens and made it her home. At 23 years of age she stumbled upon a John Constable exhibition that was travelling through New Zealand while she was on a visit herself, and it was while standing in front of “Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds” that her body shook so much she couldn’t feel the floor and she discovered tears streaming down her cheeks. She knew then she simply HAD to paint and so taught herself how.
There is always deep considered thought behind the inspiration for her works of art. She believes that both the world outside and in are rich and complex and therefore worthy of deep, intelligent, and graceful consideration and discussion. Such discussions sometimes take place upon a canvas.
