The femininity that presents itself in Jeska Valk’s work is inspired by her mother. An avid sewer, her mum produced many garments in her time, (these pieces are featured in Jeska’s work).
A trip to France together further inspired Jeska, where she learnt about the history of Europe’s Master Painters, notably the 16th – 17th Century Renaissance and Baroque artists like Titian, Vermeer, and Frans Pourbus. It was in this time that lace first arose in Europe. Its complexity and intricacy told a story more than any other fabric.
Travelling through the South of France to Aix-en-Provence, where Impressionist artists, Renoir, Monet and Cezanne, famously painted poppies, resonated with Jeska as it was a familiar scene she learnt about as a young child from her mother.
Art became an addiction for Jeska, she was fascinated by the interpretation, detail and view the artists told of times past.
“Finding beauty in the details changed my life.”
Jeska lives with Epilepsy and finding her passion for painting has been therapeutic. When she would focus on painting the tiny details in he work her nervous system would begin to calm down and she could refocus.
The Lace in this series is symbolic due to its ability to be so fragile but strong.
