As a graduate from the South Australian School of Art, he was influenced by artist lecturers such as David Dallwitz and Ann Newmarch. After working as a graphic designer, he decided to enroll in a teaching course at the University of South Australia, which lead to a teaching position in a leading inner-city college in Adelaide where he taught art and design until his recent retirement. Doriano now focuses on developing his painting skills and illustrating books for children. His paintings are a constant investigation into technique and understanding of the media. His interests are generally to do with figurative paintings that have a narrative based on his varied experiences. Still life and abstract paintings are also challenges he relishes. He finds painting, understanding the effects of colour and the act of pushing this plastic medium about the canvas challenging, frustrating, meditative and ultimately rewarding.
