David Weir is a Melbourne based abstract artist.
Artworks: 25
David Weir’s practice was ultimately changed forever after a trip to Kakadu National Park where he was struck by the dramatic landscape, unchanged and constantly inhabited by the Aboriginal people.
From Aboriginal Rock Art, the Culture and Sacred Stories behind it, Weir began to draw, to explore the very different path his life was taking, and painting became his key form of expression.
Central to his learning was his mentor, the late Bill Niedjie, Senior Traditional Elder for Kakadu Gagudju people, spokesperson, author and poet, with whom the artist formed a close bond.
The experience has had a profound effect on his life, which he has committed to the pursuit of his art.
In 2003 Weir moved to New Zealand for 9 years, and exposed in OrexArt Gallery. Weir was granted a commission for more than 350 original pieces, drawings and paintings for the Crown Plaza Hotel Auckland NZ.
Weir uses Inks and Acrylics, with influences from contemporary painters such as Pierre Soulages, Franz Kline, Ian Fairweather and Antonia Tapies.
He is also a finalist in the 2022 Art Lovers Australia Prize.
