Sunshine Coast QLD
Contemporary abstract mixed media artist, interpreting multidimensional experiences of personally significant places in print, paint and collage.
Artworks: 1
Whilst loosely based in the landscape painting genre, Charlotte’s work is concerned with multidimensional experiences of physical spaces. The socio-spatial interactions that happen between people, places and emotions, both historically embedded over time and in the chance encounter of the moment are recurrent themes in her work. She believes that knowledge and understanding of self and stories about her identity are deeply held within environmental contexts.
In exploring interconnections between who she is, where she is and what her story is at any given moment in time, her work reflects upon places where she observes or remembers strong emotional responses and the intrinsic role of ‘place’ in those experiences.
Rather than capture a literal representation of the landscape, Charlotte works with elements of abstracted realism whilst mindfully stepping into a space where memories flow and emotional experience is revisited, contextualised and described with specific reference to a given place.
She creates with the purpose of exploring relationships between the physical and the ephemeral and in doing so, offers her work into the transpersonal space, inviting the viewer to explore their own perception of a piece and further it’s narrative and meaning by lending their own experience to it’s interpretation.
Charlotte’s creative process is a physical manifestation of a distillation of thoughts and lived experience that begins initially with expressive painting, mark making and layers of collage, which are then redacted and refined as she works towards achieving visual clarity through rhythmic use of shape colour and line. Paint, print, collage and drawing are all readily employed during her process, each offering unique qualities that support her story telling.
Charlotte began exhibiting in Australia in 2008, maintaining a private arts practice between 2013 and 2019, returning to the studio full time in 2020. She has been a finalist in local, regional and international art awards and has participated in group shows locally, nationally and internationally.
She holds a BA(Hons) in Fine Art and Design Technology from Leeds University, UK and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (Secondary Art) from Bath Spa University College, UK.
