Ann Russell is a mixed media artist based in Queensland. She explores the liminal spaces that occur on the peripheries of perception and is passionate about the environment and encouraging creativity.
I believe that art and creativity are crucial to a holistic life and the key to embracing diversity. I am a visual artist and art educator of many years and am convinced of the therapeutic value of making art. In fact, it is like breathing to me. I have explored many different media, and most of my current work is mixed media, often growing from water colour or other water based media painting. My interest in art education has led me to complete a Master of Arts (visual art) and I am a current candidate for the Doctor of Creative Arts at the University of Southern Queensland, using practice-led research to explore the hidden in curriculum in schools. I have exhibited locally, interstate and overseas; and have work in public and private collections. My work has been selected for finalist exhibitions for numerous notable art awards, including the Churchie Emerging Art Award and Woolhara Small Sculpture Prize and have won numerous awards. Layering is a crucial component of my work as it enables nuanced meaning and symbolism. In some of my work, I alternate layers of clear or tinted resin with paint, translucent paper, hand made decals and found objects. I am passionate about the environment, sustainability and encouraging creativity and diversity in society.
